President Donald Trump addresses President Vladimir Putin’s comments about Joe Biden

Former President Donald Trump has often been accused of collusion with Russian President Vladimir Putin., He said he took it as a “compliment” after a foreign leader claimed his country wanted President Joe Biden to win the 2024 US presidential election.

“This is a compliment,” President Trump told supporters at a campaign rally in North Charleston, South Carolina, 10 days before he faces former Gov. Nikki Haley in the Palmetto State primary.

Trump said without evidence that Putin would prefer Biden because he is less tough on Russia following its bloody invasion of Ukraine.

“I got along well with him, but he doesn’t want me,” Trump said.

President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin attend a summit meeting in Osaka, Japan in 2019.

According to Reuters, the former president said this shortly after Putin told Russian state television that he wanted Biden, not Trump, to be seen as U.S. president.

Asked which American candidate was “better for us,” Putin said: “Biden. He’s more experienced, more predictable, an old-fashioned politician… But we think the American people have confidence in him.” “I intend to work with any American president who does so.” in. “

Few foreign policy analysts believe that Putin prefers the incumbent president. They cited President Trump’s positions that often favor Russia, including his long-standing criticism of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military alliance.

Trump, Russia, Putin, NATO

The North Charleston rally and President Putin’s comments about Biden come less than a week after President Trump infuriated world opinion by suggesting he would not help NATO countries if they were attacked by Russia. Ta.

At Saturday’s rally in Conway, South Carolina, President Trump said he had previously told foreign leaders that he would not support a mutual defense pact if NATO members did not fully fund it. He added that such a situation could “encourage” Russia to “do whatever it wants.”

Trump also criticized NATO, often with Putin’s support, during his presidency, and he held several friendly talks with Putin. Russia also appears to have supported Trump in his campaign to interfere in the 2016 election against Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.

The former president defended NATO countries’ comments in a speech Wednesday, saying he would not “protect” NATO countries if they “don’t pay the bills.”

President Trump’s recent comments drew immediate criticism from world leaders, members of Congress, and opponents of the 2024 election campaign. They all said NATO makes a huge contribution to their country’s defense and that President Trump is being irresponsible on the world stage.

President Trump sparks widespread backlash with NATO attack

Hours before Mr. Trump took the stage in North Charleston, former President Barack Obama agreed with Mr. Biden, calling Mr. Trump’s behavior reckless and provocative.

Although President Obama did not mention President Trump by name, he said on X (formerly Twitter), “What we need most right now is a more chaotic and less secure world, where dictators… “It feels like we’re emboldened and our allies are wondering if they can count on us.”

Biden said Wednesday that President Trump “invited President Putin to invade” some NATO allies.

“Can you imagine a former president of the United States saying something like that? The whole world heard it. And the worst part is that he meant it,” Biden said. “No president has ever surrendered to a dictator,” he added. ”

Haley, Trump’s former ambassador to the United Nations, has repeatedly criticized Trump’s comments about NATO while campaigning in South Carolina. In her CNN interview this week, she denounced “the idea that he’s siding with a guy who murders his opponents.”

Haley told CNN on Monday that NATO countries need to “pay more” and that “we should always encourage them to take responsibility. But at the same time, understand that NATO is a success story.” he said.
