Android devices are set to come with powerful new video playback features, according to a new report. This upgrade will be available as a free update that will enable faster video processing, especially on low-cost smartphones.

All but the latest flagship smartphones and tablets do not have specialized hardware designed to speed up playback of videos encoded in the increasingly popular AV1 format, and instead rely on software to Processing is performed depending on the

Many services such as YouTube, Netflix, and Twitch have begun offering AV1 video (along with other formats) due to its smaller file size, lower bandwidth requirements, and royalty-free licenses.

Unfortunately, software decoders can sometimes struggle to keep up with AV1 video streams, especially on low-power devices. Even on flagship devices with powerful CPUs, with the current software decoder libgav1 he may be limited in resolution and frame rate when playing AV1 videos.

Well, according to a report by Android expert Mishaal Rahman. Android permissionsGoogle is preparing a significant Android update that includes a “significantly improved” software AV1 decoder called libdav1d.

According to a report, the creators of the popular VLC media player libdav1d developed by VideoLAN can smoothly play high-quality AV1 videos even on low-end hardware. Rahman said that when testing on a Pixel 3XL, he achieved more than 5x performance when using libdav1d compared to his current default decoder.

In Rahman’s tests, 8-bit 4K 60fps video played at less than 10fps using the current software AV1 decoder, but over 50fps when switching to libdav1d. More importantly, Netflix clips encoded at 1080p and 25fps went from choppy at less than 10fps with libgav1 to smooth and jumped to 25fps when I switched to the new decoder.

According to two anonymous sources referenced in the report, Google plans to upgrade its software AV1 decoder to libdav1d by March 2024 through a Google Play system update. If this is true, users of low-cost hardware will soon be able to enjoy video streams previously unavailable on their devices, while reducing their mobile data consumption.

It’s unclear whether older devices such as Rahman’s Pixel 3XL will receive this update. However, users of older devices can try playing media using the VLC app, which has a new software decoder built-in.
