Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the continent had entered a “pre-war period” for the first time since World War II and warned of the “real” threat of conflict in Europe.
“War is no longer a concept of the past. It is a reality and it started more than two years ago. What worries me most at the moment is that literally any scenario is possible. A situation like this I haven’t seen it since 1945,” Tusk said in an interview with European media group LENA on Friday.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago upended European leaders’ sense of a solid post-war peace and prompted many countries to accelerate weapons production to supply both Kiev’s and their own militaries.
Former European Council President Tusk, one of neighboring Ukraine’s most ardent supporters, said on Friday that “nobody” in Europe would be relieved if Kiev lost.
Also of concern to the continent is the possible return of former US President Donald Trump. Trump’s open NATO skepticism casts doubt on the credibility of U.S. military aid if he is re-elected in November.
“No matter who the president of the United States is, our job is to foster the transatlantic relationship,” Tusk said in an interview.
