Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that there is a “real” threat of conflict in Europe and that the continent has entered a “pre-war period” for the first time since World War II.
“War is no longer a concept of the past. It’s true, it started more than two years ago. The most worrying thing at the moment is that literally any scenario is possible. Since 1945, such a I have never seen the situation,” Tusk said in an interview with European media group LENA on Friday.
World War II ended in 1945 with the surrender of Hitler’s Germany and the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States.
“I know it sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to get used to the fact that a new era has begun, the pre-war era. It will become clear.”
The former European Council President’s comments come just after two years have passed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This war turned Europe’s peaceful era upside down and prompted countries to expand their weapons production.
Tusk also said that if Kiev loses the war, no one in Europe will feel safe.

The Polish Prime Minister pointed out that there is a revolution in European thinking, as no one anymore questions the need for a common defense.
He gave the example of Germany’s largest parties, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU), saying they were “competing to see who is more pro-Ukrainian.”
“The whole European Union, as a strong organization, must be mentally prepared to fight for the security of its borders and territory,” he said.
The need for a stronger Europe has received further attention after former US President Donald Trump, who is running for election in 2024, has publicly expressed skepticism about NATO.
“No matter who the president of the United States is, our job is to foster the transatlantic relationship,” Tusk said in an interview.
