Pixel Tablet 2 codename may have been leaked in Google’s latest beta

What you need to know

  • Hidden in the code of Google’s latest Android 14 beta are two codenames, “Clementine” and “Kiyomi,” which could be a reference to the Pixel Tablet 2.
  • Google has a history of using citrus fruits as codenames for its tablets, but the presence of two fruits reminds us of the possibility of a “Pro”.
  • Google launched the Pixel Tablet shortly after I/O 2023, but it will be interesting to see if they finally offer accessories for that device in 2024.

We’ve come to expect Google’s releases every year, but some information about the next Android tablet may have been discovered.

A deep dive into the APK by 9to5Google found several codenames for future Pixel smartphones, as well as (possibly) the Pixel Tablet 2. Within the code of Android 14 QPR3 Beta 1, the publication found the names “Clementine” and “Kiyomi”. These are guesses. Points to a new Android tablet.

There is no information in the code for the latest beta, indicating that these are named Pixel Tablet 2. But there is history to draw on.

Before the Pixel Tablet was released, the device had two codenames: “tangor” and “tangorpro.” 9to5 reiterates that the device’s charging speaker dock once had two names: “Korlan” and “Yuzu.” These names follow the pattern of citrus fruits following clementine and kiyomi.

It’s also worth noting that despite having two names for the tablet and dock, Google has only released one version so far. It remains to be seen how Google will approach the next version, and whether one of these names will truly be a “pro” model, as we missed last year.

In the absence of concrete evidence pointing to the next tablet, it may be wise to discount these discoveries.

There haven’t been many rumors of a purported Pixel Tablet 2 since the original device was released in 2023. One hope is that Google will put his Tensor G3 chip into tablets and offer on-device machine learning like the Pixel 8. series. Android Central expects the Pixel Tablet 2 to have an upgraded display.

The tablet currently uses an LCD panel, but an OLED screen would bring a noticeable leap forward to the user experience for gaming and watching videos. Also, I haven’t received my Google keyboard or stylus yet, so having the accessories isn’t a problem. Having the speaker dock that comes with your tablet work on its own can also help make your device more appealing.

A versatile master who can do anything

The Pixel Tablet is a simple-looking device, but peel back the software layers and you might be surprised. This tablet brings consumers’ favorite Pixel series and its great features to a big screen, making it your companion indoors and outdoors. Pixel Tablet also acts as a powerful smart home hub via a charging speaker dock.
