The image at the top of this article really highlights the absurdity of Android saying “fast charging” when you plug your device in. As you can see, my Pixel 8 Pro is plugged in at 81%, yet it still takes 41 minutes to reach 100%, even with a charger that consumes enough power to show the words “fast charging”. In what world is a 19% charge considered “fast” when it takes 41 minutes?
The reason these characters appear on Android devices like my Pixel 8 Pro is because Google is triggering these characters by setting the charger’s transmission rate to the device at an abnormally low rate. Android will show these characters when a charger that provides 7.5W of power is plugged in. If the charger provides between 5W and 7.5W of power, it will just say “Charging.” And finally, if the charger can’t even provide 5W of power, it will say “Charging Slowly.”
7.5W is very slow by today’s standards, and has been for years, there’s a reason this phone is “fast charging” and took 41 minutes to get the last 19%. only Because Google is trying to protect the battery. Because the charger is slow. The battery is huge, but the system still thinks the slow charger is fast. Google should try to communicate this information more accurately.

It looks like Google has made a tweak that will make it so that the “fast charging” message will only appear if your charger is capable of 20W speeds. The change was made in one configuration file, but it needs to be made in another file before it’s visible to users. I expect Google will do just that as Android 15 becomes fully stable in the coming weeks.
Google has allowed other phone manufacturers to change these limits, but it’s unclear whether they have actually done so. For Google’s Pixel phones, this low 7.5W limit has remained in place for some time, presumably since it was first introduced.
Why is that a problem? Because it’s extremely misleading to users. The Pixel 8 Pro can charge at a 30W wired speed, but if you plug it into a friend’s 7.5W charger you’ll get the same message and the charging time can vary dramatically. Changing to 20W will at least communicate that the Pixel 8 Pro should charge to 50% of its rated capacity in 30 minutes. This allows for better planning and peace of mind.
Another issue here is that Google needs to adjust the wording on the screen as a phone like the Pixel 8 Pro charges to a higher percentage and slows down the charging speed. If it’s gradually reducing the charging speed to preserve battery life, it needs to change the wording depending on the power being delivered. It’s very silly to only look at the power available from the charger. The OS should be able to tell you exactly what’s happening. the current At least in my opinion, charging speed is not a feature, it’s how fast it charges.
