Darkroom, the photo and video editing app for Mac, iPad, and iPhone, celebrates its 9th anniversary this week, and its developer has introduced new features to celebrate.

“Nine years ago, we launched Darkroom, and we’re grateful to the hundreds of thousands of photographers who use Darkroom to edit their photos on the go,” says Darkroom. “Thank you to everyone who has worked with us for almost 10 years and supported our business. We see millions of installs, shared photos and installed presets every month. is exciting.”

Released on iPhone in 2015, Darkroom came to iPad in 2018, won an Apple Design Award in 2020, and was released natively on Mac in 2021. Over the years, this app has undergone many upgrades and is currently at version 6.7.

Improvements include many changes and new features, including presets and new color tools in 2015, RAW and batch editing in 2017, masks in 2022, and Leica FOTOS integration last year.

Behind the scenes, the Darkroom team has been hard at work developing an all-new rendering engine built from the ground up. This is his third time the team has done this, with the last new rendering engine being released in his 2020. Development of the latest engine has been ongoing for over a year, and the team recently reached a major milestone in delivering a fully functional app. Built on new rendering technology.

The team is currently working on integrating the new engine into the main Darkroom app. This engine addresses various issues and promises improved performance and image quality. It also enables faster updates and new features.

There’s no set schedule yet for when the new engine will be available to users, but another improvement is expected to arrive soon in the form of Preset Sync. This joins the existing flag and reject sync across devices and paves the way for the highly requested edit sync feature in the future.

Another feature is the brushed mask. This improves photo retouching, but it puts a strain on the current rendering engine, so we have to wait for release until the new engine is ready.

Darkroom is available for free on Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Darkroom+ costs $4.99 per month and unlocks all of the app’s editing features.
