Last offseason, the Carolina Panthers signed running back Miles Sanders to a four-year, $25.4 million contract, but is their time together over?
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports recently listed the top players who could be cut or traded after June 1. Sanders slipped onto the list of six players after a nightmarish start with the Panthers.
A year after signing a premium free-agent contract with Carolina, Sanders could find himself competing with Jonathan Brooks and Chuba Hubbard for backup carries as new coach Dave Canales looks to bolster the run attack. The Panthers could immediately save $200,000 by releasing Sanders.
Sanders, who had the best year of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022, recorded his lowest number of starts (five), attempts (129) and rushing yards (432). He also had just one touchdown and averaged 3.3 yards per carry, third-lowest among eligible NFL players.
But there may be hope for this marriage: Sanders, even after being pushed out of the starting spot by Hubbard and watching the Panthers take the first running back overall in the 2024 draft, may still have a place on this team, at least according to president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan.
“The thing about Miles, we love Miles,” Morgan said after drafting Brooks in April. “We think he has a big role to play. Dave [Canales] I think everyone will say the same thing. We really think highly of Miles and we love him. He brings a lot to our offense. He’s versatile in the passing game and he’s a really good runner, so we’re excited about him.”
