Pakistan needs to move away from politics of “anarchy and polarization”, the country’s military chief said on Saturday, as the final results of a general election gradually became known.
The military has a large influence on Pakistan’s political landscape, and generals have ruled the country for nearly half of its history since its separation from India in 1947.
“Moving forward from politics of anarchy and polarization requires a stable workforce and a healing touch, but this progressive country of 250 million people cannot move forward,” General Syed Asim Munir said in a military statement. It doesn’t suit me,” he said.
Politicians and parties often rise and fall with support from the military, and this year it was widely believed that the military was backing the party of three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

But the military-backed Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won the largest number of seats after long delays in announcing the results, raising further suspicions that military authorities were involved in voter fraud. The party declared victory.
The military statement quoted Munir as saying, “Elections are not zero-sum competitions between winners and losers, but rather exercises to determine the people’s mandate.”
“Political leaders and their staff should combine their efforts to govern and serve their people beyond self-interest; perhaps that is the only way to make democracy functional and purposeful.”
