PRESS RELEASE — Oxford Instruments today announced that Dr. Tienchen Song, an experimental physicist and Dicke Fellow at Princeton University, has been awarded the 2024 Lee Osheroff Richardson Award.

Dr. Song is known for his efforts in developing and employing various measurement techniques at low temperatures and in magnetic fields to study 2D superconductivity and magnetism in van der Waals heterostructures. His research has revealed a series of emergent quantum phenomena in 2D superconducting and magnetic systems.

The Lee Osheroff Richardson Prize in Science encourages and recognizes the innovative work of young scientists working in the fields of low temperature and/or high magnetic field or surface science in the Americas.

“I am very pleased to receive this year’s prestigious Lee Osheroff Richardson Prize in Science. I am honored to receive this award as I join the ranks of distinguished scientists who have received this award for their famous experiments and achievements. I feel this is a special honor,” Dr. Song said.

Tiancheng Song is currently a Dicke Fellow in the Department of Physics at Princeton University. In collaboration with Professor Sanfeng Wu, Dr. Song recently developed new techniques to study 2D superconductivity, strongly correlated phases, and related unconventional quantum phase transitions.

In his research at Princeton University, Dr. Song successfully measured superconducting quantum fluctuations in single-layer WTe2 based on the vortex Nernst effect. This result led to the discovery of a new type of quantum critical point beyond the traditional Ginzburg-Landau theory and demonstrated a new highly sensitive probe for 2D superconductivity and superconducting phase transitions.

Dr. Song’s research work is well known in the community, and his work has been cited more than 4,000 times. Dr. Song’s initial contributions are evidenced by the faculty offers he subsequently received. He will join the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an assistant professor in May 2024.

As part of the award, Dr. Song will receive $8,000 and assistance to attend the APS March Conference in Minneapolis, where the award will be presented.

The 2024 LOR Science Award Selection Committee is chaired by Professor Laura Greene of NHMFL and FSU and includes the following members: Professor Hae-Young Kee, University of Toronto; Professor Colin Broholm of Johns Hopkins University. Professor Paula Giraldo Gallo, University of the Andes. and Dr. Xiaomeng Liu of Princeton University (2023 winner).

About the LOR Science Award

Oxford Instruments recognizes that for many scientists there is an important and often difficult step between earning a PhD and entering a permanent research position. The company is happy to support individuals who produce innovative research by providing financial support and properly promoting research activities through sponsoring his LOR Scientific Prize in the Americas for the past 19 years . This award is in honor of Professors David M. Lee, Douglas D. Osheroff, and Robert C. Richardson, who co-received his 1996 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of “superfluidity in helium-3.” It was named.

Previous recipients of the LOR Science Award include Dr. Xiaomeng Liu, Dr. James Nakamura, Dr. Matthew Jankowitz, Dr. Shen Lan, Dr. Paula Giraldo Gallo, Dr. Kate Ross, Dr. Brad Ramshaw, and Mohammad. – Dr. Hamidian, Dr. Cory Dean, and Dr. Chiara Tarantini. , Dr. Lu Li, Dr. Kenneth Birch, Dr. Jin Xia, Dr. Vivian Giap, Dr. Eun-Sung Kim, Dr. Suchitra Sebastian, Dr. Jason Petta, and Dr. Christian Lupien.
