BP’s EV charging brand, BP Pulse, will electrify one of Europe’s largest and busiest truck stops, powering electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

Ashford International Truckstop is located in Kent, England. The 21-acre Ashford International Truck Stop currently offers 660 parking spaces and convenient services for HGV drivers, and also features a restaurant, shop, bar and gym.

We are also close to Dover, the UK’s busiest ferry port, and LeShuttle Freight via Folkestone’s Eurotunnel terminal. Around 3.5 million HGVs cross the English Channel each year via the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel.

Our acquisition of bp Pulse and our plans to electrify key truck stops will therefore enable us to better meet the needs of UK and European HGV operators as they transition to EVs.

Stefan von Dobschutz, General Manager of BP Pulse Europe, said:

For fleet operators to consider a transition to electric, they need to be confident that the infrastructure is in place to support it.

That is why we are delighted to have secured this important site near Dover to meet the evolving needs of HGV operators as they transition to EVs.

We look forward to working with our national energy infrastructure partners to facilitate timely power connections for ambitious projects.

bp Pulse can install EV chargers suitable for both fast charging and overnight charging.

According to the company, the Ashford International truck stop will be equipped with approximately 20 MW chargers, 10 x 400kW chargers and 100kW chargers, depending on the availability of power connections and the speed with which the road freight sector electrifies. It is said to have the capacity to accommodate 125 cars.

The megawatt charger has the potential to fully charge an HGV in up to 45 minutes, giving it a range of 310 miles (500 km) on a single charge, depending on conditions.

BP Pulse will lease back the site to Ashford International Truckstop, currently owned by real estate company GSE Group, to operate existing site facilities and secure parking. bp Pulse operates and manages EV charging infrastructure.

bigger plans for bp pulse

In 2022, BP Pulse announced that it would invest up to £1 billion in EV charging infrastructure in the UK and €100 million in EV charging infrastructure in Germany by 2030.

In January 2023, BP opened Europe’s first truck charging corridor along 600 km (373 miles) of the Rhine-Alpine corridor across Germany. BP operates 21 Aral Puls (BP’s brand in Germany) EV truck stops in Germany. This will enable the electric trucks to cover more than 750 km (466 miles) on multiple routes across Germany.

The first megawatt chargers will be installed in Ashford from 2026. Once they come online, they will establish a link between the UK and Germany charging corridors, further facilitating the transition to electricity for HGV operators.
