The following was released by Omega Protein and Ocean Harvesters.

LEADSVILLE, VA / ACCESSWIRE / February 23, 2024 / Omega Protein and its fishing partner Ocean Harvesters have long supported research projects to improve our understanding of Atlantic menhaden populations and their ecosystems.

For the past 8 years, We are a National Science Foundation (NSF) program partner. known as Marine Fisheries Science Center (SCEMFIS).of Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) is one of only two host universities for the Science Center.

Since 2016, SCEMFIS has supported the following projects specifically for Atlantic menhaden: All this led to scientific publications and many graduate student papers.

  • Atlantic menhaden reproductive biology and fecundity Principal Scientists – James Gartland, Robert J. Latour, Wolfgang K. Vogelbein (VIMS)
  • Meta-analysis of the effects of forage fish abundance on predator productivity, Principal Investigator – Olaf Jensen (Rutgers)
  • Understanding the impacts of fishing forage fish; Principal Investigators – Olaf Jensen (Rutgers University) and Robert Reif (University of Southern Mississippi)
  • Planning for a joint winter pelagic survey of Atlantic menhaden in the mid-Atlantic region Principal Scientist – Genevieve Nesslage (University of Maryland Environmental Science Center)
  • Assessing the Impact of Plus Group Definitions on Atlantic and Gulf Menhaden Stock Assessments Principal Scientists – Genevieve Nesslage (University of Maryland Environmental Science Center) and Robert Leaf (University of Southern Mississippi)
  • Atlantic Menhaden Stock Review, Atlantic Menhaden Ecological Reference Point Review, Atlantic Menhaden Forage Provision, and SEDAR 69 Atlantic Menhaden Stock Assessment and Ecological Reference Point Review Principal PI – Steve Cadrin (University of Massachusetts Dartmouth)

Our contribution to menhaden science extends beyond our collaboration with SCEMFIS. Key components of the model used by NOAA scientists and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) to conduct menhaden stock assessments are derived from fish landed in Leadville. This data has been successfully used for benchmark stock ratings and rating updates.

Omega protein is Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) research The study, led by Dr. Alexei Sharov of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, involved using a laser to target schools of menhaden in the bay and estimating the size of the school by the time the laser reflected off the fish. Unfortunately, the project was canceled due to water turbidity issues and airspace restrictions.

We are proud of our many contributions to menhaden science over the years and continue to support excellent research that ensures healthy fisheries now and in the future.
