Tchia, the absolutely captivating open-world indie game that first released on PlayStation and PC last year, is coming to Switch on June 27th.
I learned this because Nintendo released a release date trailer today at the Triple-i Initiative 2024 indie showcase. Coincidentally, I remembered that I need to play this game again on Switch when it comes out. The gameplay shown in the trailer is as smooth and vibrant as I remember his PC version, with the titular protagonist using a Zelda-esque glider to glide through the skies, solve puzzles, and… It shows you transforming into different animals and exploring the map.
I can’t blame you if you’re not used to it. Tchia released one of the busiest video game releases of all time near the beginning of his calendar, overshadowed by behemoths like Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo 4, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Starfield. But if you’re interested in an indie game that gently guides you through culturally rich worlds and stories, you should definitely give Tchia a try.
As far as open world exploration goes, there’s a lot more to the game than that, but Tchia evokes the same sense of wonder and excitement I get when traveling to foreign countries, and that’s just by design. Thing. Tchia is inspired by New Caledonia, a Pacific country within the French Republic where Studio Aweceb founder Thierry Boura and his Phil Crifo grew up.
The culture of the Kanak people, the Melanesian indigenous people of New Caledonia, influenced the fictional archipelago of Chia and the music, language, folklore, traditions, and food found there today. In my opinion, exploring a video game is always much more rewarding when you know it’s rooted in a foreign culture, as it also serves as a process of discovery and learning.
Anyway, yes, exploration in Tchia is great, but I also love the Soul Jump mechanic, which opens up so many fun new ways to explore the beautiful world. Additionally, there are challenging side quests and a compact but heartwarming growth story for the lovable protagonist, as well as a number of inventive mini-games that actually drive and expand the story.
I can’t wait to play Tchia again on Switch.
