NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio (WJW) – North Ridgeville High School (NRHS) students are helping run a new business that gives students with disabilities the opportunity to prove themselves and learn valuable life skills. busy.
“Capable Confections is a student-run baking program,” said Stephanie Gaudino, NRHS intervention specialist. “Students with various disabilities help prepare chocolate-covered pretzels and Oreos, and we also take orders for cupcakes.”
Gaudino helps supervise the program’s 17 students, teaching them hygiene practices, general kitchen safety, and business sense when preparing meals for others.
“Many of our students, if they end up living at home or in an assisted living environment, will learn the same kitchen safety skills and meal preparation skills that you and I do at home. “I want them to learn,” she said.
Not only do students learn valuable skills that will be useful after graduation, but they also feel a sense of pride knowing that people truly enjoy their work. But it’s also a lot of fun.
“It’s fun and fun to collaborate with friends,” said student Kayden Platsky.
Platsky’s role in the assembly-line style of work is to be the “sprinkle master,” who is responsible for the final plating of the desserts.
He said he is grateful to the program’s leaders.
“I think they’re great and I’m happy to have them,” Platsky said.
Proceeds from orders go directly back into the nonprofit business and are used to pay for groceries and materials, as well as community activities for students.
Gaudino said the program is empowering to students.
“I think it’s most important for us to get them involved in the community and show everyone how smart they are and how hard they work,” Gaudino said.
