Folium is now the first Nintendo 3DS emulator for iPhone available on the App Store, but there are a few things to note.
First of all, it’s the first Nintendo emulator to be paid for on the App Store. Folium developer Jarrod Norwell is selling the app for $4.99. It’s a bold choice considering Nintendo recently sued the developer of Yuzu, a Nintendo Switch emulator that had a lucrative model with its subscription-based “early access” tier. Yuzu reached a $2.4 million settlement with Nintendo and discontinued the emulator earlier this year. It’s unclear whether Nintendo will take any action against Folium, but it could risk additional scrutiny as a paid app.
Second, Apple does not allow emulators to use “just-in-time” (JIT) compilation. This limitation may result in poor performance of Nintendo 3DS games, especially on older iPhone models, but your situation may vary. We recommend reading user reviews on Reddit and elsewhere before deciding whether to buy Folium.
Third, it’s possible that another all-in-one emulator on the App Store, like RetroArch, could add Nintendo 3DS support for free in the future.
With all this in mind, Folium offers you the opportunity to recreate classic Nintendo 3DS games on your iPhone right now, providing you provide the ROMs. However, be aware that downloading copyrighted games is illegal in many countries.
Folium also offers emulation for Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, but for those consoles we recommend using the free Delta app. Folium is compatible with many hardware controllers, including the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Backbone One, and the latest PlayStation and Xbox controllers.
