Nikki Haley hints she won’t keep her promise to support Republican candidates

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said Sunday that she and other presidential candidates are no longer bound by a previous promise to support the eventual Republican nominee, widely expected to be former President Donald Trump. He said he did not feel that he was being treated.

The Republican National Committee has made this pledge a key condition for candidates wishing to participate in the party’s debates. In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Haley acknowledged the pledge was a must, but added that the party has changed since then.

“The RNC is not the same RNC now,” she said.

The organization is in turmoil as President Trump moves to take control. He had indicated that her daughter-in-law and two others would assume RNC leadership before RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel stepped down, a decision he announced last week.

Asked directly if he would support Trump if he dropped out, he declined to say, but said, “I have serious concerns about Donald Trump.” There are further concerns about Joe Biden. ”

Haley remains the last Republican candidate running against Trump, but she recently lost to the former president in a state nomination contest. He lost by wide margins in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. Last month, he lost to Trump in his home state of South Carolina by about 20 points.

Haley has vowed to remain in the presidential race until at least 16 states contest Super Tuesday, March 5.

Haley, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, was participating in the debate along with former Republican candidates including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and technology entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. The pledge also stated that candidates would refrain from making third-party bids for themselves.

Notably, Trump, who did not participate in the debate, refused to sign such an oath of allegiance.

Haley also said on “Meet the Press” that she is concerned about whether Trump will follow the Constitution if he wins a second term.

“You always want to think someone will do that for you, but I don’t know,” Haley said. “When you go and talk about revenge, what does it mean when you go and talk about revenge?”
