Nike on Thursday unveiled the Team USA track and field kit for the 2024 Olympics. They were not very well received.

One photo of the women’s kit in particular sparked intense backlash from female athletes as it showed a large amount of the mannequin’s pelvic area on the bottom of the kit. Critics were quick to accuse Nike of wearing overly revealing uniforms.

Nike responded to the backlash via Reuters in an article published Saturday, noting that it offers a unitard option for athletes who wear both brief-style bottoms and shorts. 100 meter runner Shakari Richardson She was modeling the shorts look on Thursday..

This is clearly an improvement from the Tokyo Games kit, where only briefs were provided.

Of course, that one photo of the mannequin became an easy fodder on social media, with several athletes criticizing it.

Hurdle Queen Harrison Clay: “Hello, @europeanwax would you like to sponsor Team USA at the upcoming Olympics?! Thank you!”

Obstacle chaser Colleen Quigley: “I mean, I still want to be on the team…”

Sprinter Caitlin Hutchison: “April Fool’s Day was 10 days ago.”

Paralympic athlete Jalene Roberts: “This mannequin is stationary and everything is reflected…imagine it in flight.”

Former U.S. champion Lauren Fleshman: “This is a costume born of patriarchal forces, and bringing attention to women’s sports is no longer welcome or necessary.”

One voice of opposition was 2020 Olympic pole vaulter Katie Moon, who actually wore the kit. said in X She said she was “not worried about…things…flying out”, adding that there may have been a problem with the mannequin instead.

Month Friday, I expanded on those ideas.noted that female athletes have the option of wearing men’s kit, and argued that attacks on brief-style kits can actually be damaging to female athletes who choose to wear them. Did.

To be clear, I would like to start by saying that what was shown to the mannequin was alarming and the reactions it received were justified. However, I also saw people making comments like, “Why can’t men’s uniforms be made for women?” I love women’s advocates, but we have at least 20 different combinations of uniforms with all the tops and bottoms available. Men’s options are also available upon request. When you attack bangs or crop tops by calling them “sexist” (which we would do if that was our only option), even if it was with the best of intentions. , to wear it you would ultimately be attacking our decision as women.

And honestly, on the most important day of our careers, we choose the clothes we wear to appease the men watching us to be the most comfortable, confident, and to the best of our abilities. If you’re thinking about it, that’s pretty unpleasant. I personally like buns. This is because I want to minimize the amount of fabric clinging to my body when I get hot and sweaty (which happens to me 99% of the competitions I go to). Importantly, we have a choice in what we wear, and whether we feel best wearing a potato sack or a bathing suit during a competition is up to us. It means we need to support autonomy.

Nike and its partner Fanatics received massive criticism for MLB’s new uniforms ahead of the 2024 season, marking the second major blowback Nike has seen this year as an official uniform supplier. . No one liked the small letters used for player names on the back of tops, and the bottoms were noticeably see-through.

In the latter case, Nike said it is working on potential solutions.
