This year, four more destinations will be introduced and the unserviced list will change.
summary
- JFK Airways plans to offer direct flights to four more European airports this year, including Romania’s capital Bucharest.
- The top 10 list changed because three of the four were among JFK’s largest unserved markets.
- Tirana is still number one, but probably won’t fly due to low fares/yields and lack of suitable airlines.
New York JFK is one of 41 U.S. airports offering nonstop scheduled passenger flights to Europe this year. As we all know, JFK is the country’s premier international gateway, and according to OAG, it’s where one in five people depart for Europe.
Four destinations coming in 2024
JFK Airways flies nonstop to 38 European cities this year, including four that will begin (or resume) service this summer. All services except one have been previously provided by different operators.

Here are the 69 European routes Delta has cut since 1990.
These include many routes that may surprise you.
The four-person increase is partially offset by various losses from 2019 to 2023. I excluded Moscow Sheremetyevo and Kiev Boryspil, who cannot serve due to the war in Ukraine. Here’s what’s gone:
- budapest (Last LOT Polish service available in 2022)
- dubrovnik (In 2021, operated by Delta Air Lines and United Airlines from Newark)
- dusseldorf (2019 Eurowings)
- glasgow (Delta in 2019)
- Krakow (2021 LOT Polish, distributed from Newark)
- malaga (Delta Airlines in 2019, operated by United Airlines in Newark)
- paris orly (2022 Air France, operated by French Bee/La Compagnie from Newark)

Is this the “worst” flight departure time for the US to Europe?
We will depart at 03:45. Want to join?
JFK’s New Largest Unserved Market List
The three destinations mentioned above, Bucharest, Naples, and Palermo, were included in JFK’s list of Europe’s top 10 unserved airports. This is based on booking data for the 12 months to November 2023. Here is the updated list:
I’m not saying they are or should be provided. I’m just looking at passenger numbers. The key issue is fares, which are relatively low given the low premium nature of the market as leisure traffic is much higher. There may also be a problem with their tendency to prefer summer.
The passenger numbers below pertain only to JFK. Budapest is probably a good opportunity, although only in the summer. The problem is that Hungary lacks a suitable local airline. Perhaps Delta will be tempted again? Or maybe LOT will be of interest again?
- tirana: 69,000 round-trip passengers
- budapest: 67,000 (last service by LOT Poland in 2022)
- Florence/Pisa: 59,000 (Pisa last had Delta flights in 2016. Florence’s runway is too short)
- dusseldorf: 48,000 (last served by Eurowings in 2019)
- lyon: 47,000 (last operated by Delta in 2009)
- hamburg: 44,000 (Last Emirates flight to/from Dubai, 2008)
- marseille:43,000
- malaga: 38,000 (Delta last operated in 2019)
- paris orly: 36,000 (last flight by Air France in 2022)
- Catania: 33,000 (Palermo, also in Sicily, is scheduled to return in 2024)

I do not have access to passenger leakage data that shows how many people travel overland from one airport catchment area to another to catch a flight. This is especially useful for airports like Düsseldorf and Paris-Orly that are relatively close to other facilities served by JFK direct flights. You may also want to indicate traffic conditions to and from other airports not included in the list, such as Birmingham or Glasgow.
