New science supports LNG’s climate-destroying impact as Congress considers revoking President Biden’s export suspension

Interviews available: Dr. Robert Howarth of Cornell University and Dr. Sandra Steingraber of the Science and Environmental Health Network.

Congressional Republican leaders are considering measures to reverse President Biden’s recent decision to suspend new approvals for liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facilities, but the latest science shows that LNG could be disastrous for climate stability. It is proven that it has an impact. New research by renowned climate scientist Dr. Robert Howarth shows that LNG is at least 24% more of a source of climate emissions than coal.

“Liquefied gas exports are a threat to public health, coastlines, and the climate. Republican extremists, at the mercy of their fossil fuel industry backers, are reversing the environmental and climate change costs of the unprecedented expansion of polluting industries. Senate leaders should make sure this Republican anti-science maneuver is a failure.” Jim Walsh, Policy Director, Food and Water Watch

In December, 170 climate scientists, including Dr. Howarth and Dr. Sandra Steingraber, sent a letter to President Biden calling for a permanent halt to approvals of new LNG export facilities across the United States.

“LNG is made from fracked shale gas. The development of shale gas is an energy-intensive process, and greenhouse gas emissions from shale gas are comparable to greenhouse gas emissions from burning coal. Producing and transporting LNG from shale gas requires significantly more energy to liquefy the gas and transport it in tankers, further increasing emissions. The greenhouse gas emissions are very high, significantly higher than coal.” – Dr. Robert Howarth, Professor David R. Atkinson, Professor of Ecology and Environmental Biology, Cornell University

“LNG facilities not only pump climate-destroying methane into the atmosphere while in operation, but their construction also wipes out coastal habitats that serve as our best defense against climate-changing hurricanes and storm surges.” , LNG facilities add climate damage to climate damage. Fortunately, the cost of renewable energy is plummeting, which means turning methane gas into an ultra-cold, leaky, explosive liquid that bubbles for export. This eliminates the need for further investment in capital- and energy-intensive processes.” – Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, Science and Environmental Health Network
