Google continues to add new features to Google Maps and Android Auto, but one of the most important additions concerns the navigation interface when turn-by-turn guidance is enabled.

If you’ve been using Google Maps for a long time, you probably already know that this application offers 3D building layers on your mobile device. 3D buildings make it more convenient to follow routes and know where you are, especially since Google has designed a simple UI that doesn’t let buildings get in the way of your navigation experience.

The same interface with 3D buildings debuted in Android Auto a few months ago (in late December), but rollout started slowly and only a small number of users took advantage of it. Google has reportedly accelerated its rollout, making his 3D buildings available to more users on Android Auto.

Interestingly, the new layer is enabled by default in Android Auto. On mobile devices, 3D buildings are disabled by default and users can enable them by toggling the “3D buildings” entry on and off via the Layers interface. A new toggle is also available on Android Auto, allowing users to disable his 3D buildings from the settings screen.

Some users claim that 3D buildings are only enabled in dark mode, while others claim that they are only enabled when using light mode. However, the new layer should eventually appear in Google Maps for Android Auto, regardless of visual mode.

Google hasn’t officially announced the new 3D buildings, but we expect a blog post to be published once the company completes the rollout.

Meanwhile, 3D building layers aren’t the only update coming to Google Maps for Android Auto. The search giant is also working on other improvements, including support for saving your parking location when navigating using Google Maps on Android Auto.

This feature has been available on mobile devices for several years, but Google is now bringing it to Android Auto specifically to help users whose navigation address is different from their parking location. This feature allows users to continue using Google Maps for step-by-step guidance after parking their car, turning the application into an all-in-one navigation solution.

The feature is gradually rolling out to users around the world, but Google has also remained tight-lipped about the update.

Android Auto continues to evolve with new features like AI-powered responses. Google Assistant creates summaries of long conversations or busy group chats, and allows users to reply with different answers depending on the text they receive. For example, if a contact asks you the time of arrival at a destination, Google Assistant can offer to share her ETA via Google Maps. The feature has already started rolling out in the latest Android Auto update, but it’s not yet widely available. Google just announced the feature without an ETA to complete the rollout.
