Eating pizza on Fridays during Lent is a tradition for many. In Carbon County, a pizza shop got very busy after winning his two major awards.
NESKHONING, Pa. — There’s a hidden gem just down the stairs on East Columbus Street in Nesquehoning.
“The best pizza you can buy. I’ll tell you right now.”
New Columbus Pizza works out of this kitchen in the basement of Cerimele’s home, which started as a catering business in 1958.
“This is our home, this is our farm, so we’ve always had a commercial kitchen here in the basement. I just wanted to keep the tradition going,” said owner Tony Selimel. Ta.
Currently, the pizzeria is open one day a week, baking about 100 pre-ordered pizzas.
“We’re really lucky in this city to be able to say Cherimel Pizza is from New Columbus and Neskehoning,” said Lois Kuva of Neskehoning.
Neskehoning’s biggest secret may not be a secret for long.
Owner Tony Selimele just won two major awards at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas. He was named Best Pan Pizza and World Champion Pizza Maker.
“I almost went from last place to first place. Last year wasn’t the best for me. After a year, I made up my mind. After that, I wanted to call it a day and said I’d do it again.” We worked on this pizza for a year,” Cherimel explained.
Their dedication paid off.
“The winning pizza, made with pepperoni jam made by my Texas friend Lee Hunsicker, honey-whipped ricotta, basil, and extra-virgin olive oil, is actually quite simple. It’s not a crazy pizza at all. ” said Selimel.
“Show me 100 pizzas, and you’ll choose the cherimele pizza,” Kuba said.
“I don’t really know what that means yet. I’m glad to be able to bring something back to Neskehoning. I can go back to northeastern Pennsylvania,” Selimel said.
New Columbus Pizza plans to add this award-winning pizza to its menu.
