Following Apple’s recent changes to its app review guidelines, the first NES emulator for iPhone and iPad is now available on the App Store. The launch of Bimmy, developed by Tom Salvo, mcroomers It’s listed on the forum as a “simple emulator to aid in the development and testing of homebrew games” and “for playing public domain ROMs.”

update: Just a few hours after launching the NES emulator, developer Tom Salvo removed the app from the App Store. Here is the statement he shared on his MacRumors forum regarding the removal: I got scared and deleted the app. No one pressured me to remove it. But I’d rather not take the risk. ”

The main features of Bimmy are:

  • CPU, APU, PPU emulation
  • Consolidate files
  • Game controller support
  • Support for state saving

The best thing about this NES emulator for iPhone is that it costs nothing and does not collect data from users, unlike the previous two emulators available for iPhone, iGBA (now removed) . Emu64 XL for Commodore 64.

Although the latter is still available, iGBA was a rip-off of another Game Boy emulator called Delta. Over the weekend, Apple approved the app but removed it after discovering it was a clone.to mcroomersThe company said, “App Store emulators are allowed to load ROMs downloaded from the web, as long as the app only emulates retro console games.”

That being said, I still think Nintendo should release a game emulator app for the iPhone, but I’d like to see Apple finally embrace a market that the Google Play Store has been a part of for over a decade. Interesting to see. While the majority of gamers use emulators to play old game ROMs, there is a way to legally rip a physical cartridge and play the games you own on an emulator. There are also many homebrew games available for free.

We’ll be keeping an eye on all the new emulators coming to the App Store. So far we have Emu64 XL, a NES emulator for iPhone, and hopefully Delta will also be available on the App Store soon. Riley Testut hasn’t said when he plans to release the game emulator app for iPhone, but it could be released on his alternative app store AltStore for EU users.

BGR We asked Nintendo for comment regarding the game emulator app on the App Store.
