Following Apple’s rule change, the first approved Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulator for iPhone and iPad is available in the App Store today. This emulator is called Bimmy and was developed by Tom Salvo.

iOS NES emulator Bimmy features
The App Store describes Bimmy as a tool for testing and playing public domain/”homebrew” games created for the NES, but the app also allows you to play online games such as Super Mario Bros. You can load ROMs for downloadable NES games. And Donkey Kong. Some of these games are nearly 40 years old, as Nintendo released his NES game console in 1985. Nintendo states on its website that “downloading pirated versions of Nintendo games is illegal.”

Bimmy’s release comes after Apple removed the Game Boy emulator iGBA from the App Store for plagiarizing another emulator known as GBA4iOS that was distributed outside the App Store. Apple said it had approved iGBA functionality before knowing it was a knock-off, suggesting that emulators of older Nintendo game consoles are allowed on the App Store, and Bimmy is one of its first. That seems like evidence.

Apple updated its app review guidelines earlier this month to allow emulators of retro gaming consoles. Apple says emulator developers are responsible for “all such software” provided within their apps, including compliance with “all applicable laws.”
