Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey –

Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Lakehurst hosted its annual science symposium on Feb. 9, featuring local students whose ingenuity may one day support the fighter.

The Southern New Jersey Junior Science and Humanities Symposium promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) research and experimentation among high school students and recognizes outstanding achievements. Students compete for scholarships and other awards, and the top five students from the Lakehurst competition will advance to the Department of Defense National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in New Mexico later this year.

In his opening remarks, Jacques Martenak, Lakehurst Technical Director and Chief Engineer, said the creativity and diverse perspectives the students bring to their research will help Lakehurst employees help the warfighters who keep our nation safe. He said these are the same qualities that will help him continue his mission.

“Aside from thinking about future career pursuits, take stock of the present,” Martenak said. “Make the most of this competition and authentic learning experience to strengthen your skills and confidence. You never know what opportunities and further learning may come from a new collaborative partnership.”

The symposium’s judges included NAWCAD Lakehurst staff. Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division; U.S. Army Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C5ISR) Center. New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium. and Ocean County College.

Research projects include potential new designs for safer helmets to reduce traumatic brain injuries and how changing technology can make ships used to keep supply chains moving more environmentally friendly. Includes an oral presentation on what will happen. There were also poster presentations where students shared their research on topics that directly impact life in and around Lakehurst. One student considers the hydrological effects of a lagoon system developed in Barnegat Bay, while another student develops an app to help local crab fishermen determine whether they can sustain their catch. We talked about work.

Gaetan Mangano, leader of the NAWCAD Lakehurst Educational Support Site, which has supported symposiums in the New Jersey region for more than 10 years, said it was once again a very impressive display by all the students who participated.

“Each year, the students presenting at this symposium continue to amaze us with their intelligence and the passion with which they present their research and innovation,” Mangano said. “Our employees generously support the symposium in a variety of ways, including as reviewers for research papers, as judges for finalist presentations, as symposium ushers, and as coordinating events such as award plaques.”

Mangano said the event’s success at the local and national level for the first time in 62 years is “a testament to the Department of Defense’s dedication to encouraging and promoting STEM education and opportunities across the country.”

This symposium is one of several STEM education support programs supported by NAWCAD Lakehurst. Other programs include capstone projects at the college level and scholarship programs to increase student interest in his STEM fields at the middle school, high school, and college levels. Students can also learn more about the work being done at Lakehurst through hosted tours of Lakehurst’s laboratories, test sites, and manufacturing facilities.
