President Hage Geingob announced yesterday that Namibia supports the candidacy of former Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the post of Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
His endorsement was announced just days before the WTO selects a new global trade director. Okonjo-Iweala, 66, is vying to replace Brazil’s Roberto Azevedo, who resigned at the end of August. Namibia also joined other African countries in supporting the Nigerian, who is competing against South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee. The Geneva-based World Trade Organization is expected to name a new head next month.
“When you think of Africa, you think of Nigeria. Nigeria speaks for Africa. When individuals excel in their roles, they needed support. Despite the difficulties of political alliances and governments, Namibia We continued to support Mr. Joyweala,” Geingob said. He was speaking at State House during a farewell courtesy visit by the outgoing Nigerian High Commissioner to Namibia, Lilian Aunor.
During the meeting, the President emphasized the importance of African unity, which is necessary for Africans to come together. He further commented that Nigeria is playing a constructive role in promoting Africa’s issues and interests.
Ambassador Aunor reaffirmed the good bilateral relations between the two countries.
She thanked Namibian leaders for supporting Okonjo-Iweala in her bid to become one of the first female heads of the 25-year-old intergovernmental body.
He also thanked President Geingob for the support Namibia extended to Nigeria during the successful re-election of Dr. Akinwumi Adesina as President of the African Development Bank in early August.
