On Sunday, Mykolas Alekna of California Berkeley set a world record in the discus throw of 74.35 meters at the Oklahoma Throwing Series in Romona.
In doing so, the Lithuanian-born university junior broke the world record for men’s track and field of 74.08 meters, set by Jürgen Schulte in 1986.
Alekna was a bronze medalist at the World Championships in Budapest in the summer and started the competition with a throw of 72.21 meters. He threw 70.32 meters, 72.89 meters and 70.51 meters for the remaining series, achieving the world all-time record on his fifth attempt.

Initially, the 21-year-old’s throw distance was 74.41 meters, but this was later corrected using steel tape measurements.
Alekna set the collegiate discus record with a throw of 71.00 meters about a year ago. Three of his pitches Sunday surpassed that mark. t

Alekna’s father, two-time Olympic champion Virgilius Alekna, was previously ranked second on the all-time list. He is now down to number three thanks to his 73.88m toss in 2000.
The performance came a day after Cuba’s Yaime Perez completed the world’s longest discus throw since 1989 at the same competition. On Saturday, the 2019 world champion threw 73.09 meters.
