As I walked into Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium on the morning of April 11, I thought I was going to see a genius lecture at Caltech. What I got was all that and more!

It was a genius lecture. The speaker was graduate student Hannah Dion Kirschner, and the topic was “How soil microbes can help fight climate change.” Although much of the Caltech audience ranges from gray-haired retired intellectuals, this audience was primarily her 4th graders and her 6th graders. As the speaker took the students on a journey from the microscopic microbes in the soil to the limits of the atmosphere, they were immediately on board. Dion-Kirschner told them that her piano playing is like a science. She went from idea to hypothesis to hypothesis testing…over and over again. The scientific method has become clear. Practice, practice, practice.
She explained the role of microorganisms and also played the piano. Even as smiling teachers were replaced by fidgety students, the learning process continued. And in her last 15 minutes, the students asked intelligent and penetrating questions, which the speaker praised and answered fully and clearly.
The students will remember today’s journey, and so will I. Dear Caltech, you are doing a great job.
