Qualcomm went all-out on artificial intelligence (AI) at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, USA. The American semiconductor company previewed a large-scale multimodal AI model on his Android phones and Windows PCs powered by the company’s Snapdragon platform. Also on display were the generation AI capabilities of his Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered devices from partners such as Xiaomi, OPPO, and HONOR. Details are below.
AI on Android smartphones
Qualcomm previewed Large Language and Vision Assistant (LLaVA), a large multimodal model (LMM) with more than 7 billion parameters that can accept multiple types of data input, on Android smartphones. Qualcomm says the model works with both text and images, and the LMM runs on-device, enhancing privacy, reliability, personalization and cost.

In addition to LLaVa, Qualcomm also demonstrated Low Rank Adaptation (LoRA), which performs stable diffusion on Android smartphones. According to Qualcomm, LoRA will allow users to create high-quality custom images based on personal or artistic preferences. LoRA is a scaled-down version of an AI model with fewer trainable parameters, enabling on-device generative AI use cases to be more efficient, scalable, and customizable.
Qualcomm said LoRA can be broadly applied to customized AI models, such as large-scale language models, to create customized personal assistants, improved language translation, and more.
