Former Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara has been appointed Executive Director and Full Professor at the Institute for the Future of Knowledge (IFK) at the University of Johannesburg.
IFK is an interdisciplinary ecosystem, an epistemological interface between the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the humanities.
IFK consists of six research groups. Data Science Across Disciplines (DSAD), Distributed Artificial Intelligence and Control Systems (DAICS), Metaphysics and Machines (MnM), Future of Health (FoH), Green Future (GF), Future of Diplomacy (FoD).
The robotics professor is also expected to take the helm in establishing the DAICS research group.
Additional research areas that Mutambara will pursue at IFK include law and technology, digital sovereignty, the future of work, AI and healthcare, climate change and 4IR, new ontologies (posthumanism), and a unified theory of all things.
“Today’s global problems, challenges and ambitions are complex and interconnected. They cannot be solved in traditional academic silos, but only through a multidisciplinary ecosystem approach,” said Mutambara, director of UJ’s reportedly stated on the website.
“It cannot be business as usual in the academy. Equally important, graduates who are the products of higher education must be capable of critical and structured thinking through blended learning. .
“They need to learn how to think and develop problem-solving skills based on interdisciplinary ecosystem thinking.
“Students must learn how to learn. They must acquire specific and important competencies and abilities that make them employable.”
Mutambara is expected to lead UJ’s future-oriented research in South Africa, the African continent and around the world.
Other areas of consulting, research and advisory work for private and public bodies include the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and corresponding technological advances in the fields of distributed networks, AI, automation and measurement. Thriving during and beyond COVID-19. and mechatronics, robotics, and control.
As an academic, Mr. Mutambara lectures in the university’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, where he receives excellent reviews from both students and colleagues.
In 2007, Mutambara was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
From 2015 to 2017, Mr. Mutambara served as President of African News Agency (ANA), where his primary responsibilities were media innovation, digital platform development and leveraging social media tools.
