Motorola and Lenovo announced Smart Connect at MWC 2024. Smart Connect allows a user to have a seamless multi-device experience between her PC, phone and tablet. Essentially, this is similar to the device integration you’d expect in Apple’s ecosystem, but also for Motorola and Lenovo devices.
Smart Connect is a major step for both Motorola and Lenovo, demonstrating both companies’ commitment to delivering smarter software solutions to everyone. The Smart Connect ecosystem benefits all consumers, from students and gamers to creators and business users. And for Android fans who have been staring at Apple Land with envy, this is a good taste of what his iPhone, iPad, and Mac users have enjoyed for years.
Smart Connect eliminates annoying interruptions that can occur when migrating between compatible devices (phones, tablets, PCs). Smart Connect allows users to switch tasks without additional effort and maintain an uninterrupted workflow on their existing devices. The biggest advantage of this is the fact that you don’t have to purchase a new device with a specific operating system to achieve your goals.
Smart Connect also has a feature that allows users to expand what is displayed on their phone to a larger screen. This is very useful for games, movies, TV shows, and even apps.
There are several different ways to use Smart Connect.
Cross Control lets you move between your PC, tablet, and phone using one keyboard and mouse. There’s also a swipe-to-stream feature that lets you move your activities from different apps to multiple devices with a single swipe gesture. A sharing hub is a quick way to share files and media between compatible devices, even devices on different operating systems.
Notifications are always synced across all your devices. There’s also a universal smart clipboard that makes it easy to copy text and images to another device using Smart Connect. Instant Hotspot turns your phone into a protected hotspot for your tablet or PC. You can also stream videos and games from your Motorola device and launch your mobile desktop directly on your smart TV.
And similar to Apple’s Continuity Camera, Smart Connect’s webcam feature lets you turn your smartphone into a webcam. This means you can use your phone’s high-resolution camera system to make video calls at their best.
Now, this all sounds great! But what do you need to get this great new feature? Smart Connect works with Lenovo PCs (via the Microsoft Store) running Windows 10 or later. “Select” Lenovo tablets and Motorola devices via Google Play Store. Specific device compatibility has not yet been revealed, but more information will be shared prior to the launch of Smart Connect.
How all this will work in the real world obviously remains to be seen, but if everything works as Motorola claims, Smart Connect might be worth getting excited about.
