Mobile phone retailer flees with plan to sell iPhones cheaply in Iran

The owner of an Iranian mobile phone retailer who claimed to sell iPhones at about half the price has gone into hiding, state media said, citing police.

kourosh company ran a massive advertising campaign to sell Apple’s iPhone, with prices starting at 200 million rials (about $400) for a model worth almost twice that. The company claimed that it was able to “secure low prices by eliminating middlemen.”

Reports suggested that the company had not delivered the phones to customers, and some people who had pre-purchased the phones filed lawsuits against the company.

After the government locked down the company’s offices, media reported the disappearance of owner Amirhossein Sharifian.

IRNA, citing informed police officials, claimed that an operation was underway to arrest him and that his case was being pursued by the Economic Security Police. Tasnim news agency reported that the company’s owner’s father was arrested on charges of “collusion” in this case.

Many Iranian celebrities appeared in the company’s promotional ads, asking people to trust the company and promising that they would not regret it. Celebrities who appeared in the advertisement have been criticized on social media networks.

In 2022, the Islamic Republic announced that it will not allow legal import of iPhones and will not register iPhone 14 and later models as unnecessary goods draining the country of foreign currency. Even though Iranian SIM cards are banned and do not work, new models are available on the market, with prices for expensive models reaching up to $2,000.

In August 2022, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei called for a ban on imports of “American-made luxury mobile phones” into Iran.
