MDWFP’s Mississippi Museum of Natural Science will celebrate Mississippi Arbor Day with a “STEM, Leaves, Trees” event on Friday, February 9, 2024 from 9 a.m. to noon. Visitors will experience his STEM crafts, games, and exhibits focused on Mississippi trees and their past and present role in our environment. Live trees will also be given away while supplies last.

“Visitors will enjoy fun, hands-on activities such as identifying leaves, dissecting logs, walking through giant earthen tunnels, and hiking guided nature trails with the museum’s conservation educators. MMNS Director Charles Knight explains. Visitors can also explore the museum’s permanent events, aquarium, dinosaur trail, and special exhibition “Attack of the Vampires.”

The Rebecca Cravat Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) will dedicate a live oak tree and marker to commemorate the chapter’s 60th anniversary and the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. The marker recognizes the Choctaw Revolutionary War Scouts who fought for American independence. The dedication ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. in the museum’s auditorium.

After visiting the museum, guests can ride the Spotter’s Adventure Trail to LeFleur Bluff Playground and see Maggie, a black bear sculpture carved from a playground tree by award-winning chainsaw artist Dayton Scoggins.

The museum is located in Lefleur’s Bluff State Park, 2148 Riverside Drive, Jackson, Mississippi.

This event is included with museum admission or Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Foundation membership. For field trip or group reservations, please contact Yolanda.hawkins@mmns.ms.gov. Museum admission is $8 for adults, $6 for youth ages 3-18, and $7 for seniors ages 60 and older. Visitors can learn more about the museum and plan their visit at www.mdwfp.com/museum or by calling 601-576-6000. www.facebook.com/msnaturalscience, www.instagram.com/MSScienceMuseum, and www.twitter.com/MSScienceMuseum.
