Microsoft Edge for Android may soon support the use of your desired extensions. Microsoft started testing extensions for Edge for Android earlier this year, but a savvy Reddit user discovered an option that allows you to install any extension on Edge Canary for Android, but there’s no way to replicate the process. It takes a lot of effort.
Using the extension requires enabling developer mode and using the installation ID of the extension you want to run, so it’s not a seamless experience. But that’s to be expected in the early stages of testing.
Initially, you needed Edge Canary to try out the extension, but now you can enable the extension in the stable version of Edge for Android. After using the Edge for Android extension for a week, he asked how he had gotten along without it. I’ve continued to use Edge extensions ever since, and I can’t imagine switching to a browser without extension support. Hopefully more extensions will work within the browser soon.
Regardless of the version of Edge you use on Android, you must enable the extension through Edge://flags.
- Navigate to Edge://flags in the address bar.
- Search for “Android extensions.”
- Switched Android extensions to “enabled”.
- While viewing a webpage, tap the hamburger menu (three lines) in the bottom-right corner of Edge.
- Scroll down and select Extensions, which appears next to the puzzle piece icon.
- Select Manage Extensions.
- Select the extensions you want to install on Microsoft Edge.
Oddly enough, supported extensions seem to vary depending on the version of Edge you’re using. In my testing, Dark Reader, uBlock Origin, and Global Speed worked with Edge Canary, but the stable version of Edge only supports Dark Reader and Global Speed.
How to use extensions on Edge mobile
You can currently use any extension on Edge mobile, but it’s in the early stages of testing and requires a few steps to enable and configure. You may also experience frequent crashes. It may not be worth the effort to enable all extensions at this time. But if you want to do that, Reddit user daplugg23 outlines the steps.
- Open Microsoft Edge Canary.
- Go to Settings and tap About Microsoft Edge.
- At the bottom of the screen, tap your Edge build number (for example, Edge Canary 125.0.2487.0) five times to enable developer options.
- In Developer Options, tap Install extension by ID.
- To find your extension ID, follow these steps: Open the Microsoft Edge Web Store (https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/Microsoft-Edge-Extensions-Home). b. Find and select the extension you want to install. c. Look at the URL in the address bar. d. The extension ID is the long string at the end of the URL (for example: jbkfoedolllekgbhcbcoahefnbanhhlh for Bitwarden).
- Edge Canary browser[Extension install by id]Enter your extension ID in the field.
- The extension should now be installed on your Android device.
Perhaps if more extensions work better in Edge, Microsoft will streamline the process. Alternatively, Microsoft may gradually expand the list of included extensions.
