Meta appears to be testing out Meta AI, its answer to ChatGPT, which it launched last year, to more WhatsApp users around the world.
WABetaInfo says Meta AI was initially limited to certain regions, but is now showing up in the search bars of messaging apps for more English-speaking users around the world. This means that WhatsApp is supercharging its search with serious AI power.
WhatsApp’s search bar has been upgraded with AI, but you can still find what you need the old-fashioned way, the report says. Searching for messages, groups, and contacts is expected to work as before.
WhatsApp appears to be testing different ways for people to access Meta AI. In India, some users can find this chat in the top right corner of the chat tab, as shown below.
At this point, it is unclear whether WhatsApp will continue to offer Meta AI through both the search bar and app bar icon in future releases. Perhaps this will help Meta understand what methods people like best and how to make Meta AI the easiest to use.
This experiment appears to be active for both iOS and Android users. WABetaInfo further states that Meta AI works independently and does not remember past chats.
Meta is said to have prioritized privacy in this experiment. The company only collects information if you choose to chat with her AI, and even the suggestions that appear are random. Meta obviously doesn’t track your WhatsApp activities to find them.
In addition to WhatsApp, Meta is testing Meta AI with Instagram and Messenger users in India and some parts of Africa, TechCrunch reported. A Meta representative said the social media giant is publicly testing a variety of AI-powered generative experiences in a “limited capacity.”
All of this suggests that Meta plans to leverage its large user base across various apps to further improve its AI services in the future. His AI image editing feature for Instagram may soon be coming to WhatsApp as well.
