(HILLSBORO) The Mastodon Arts and Science Fair concluded a week-long event with an awards ceremony Saturday at the Jefferson College Fieldhouse in Hillsboro. Among the students who received awards in the art category was Neo Ross, his senior at Festus High School. Ross’s painting, which focuses on mental health awareness, won “Best in Show” and the “Flying Eagle” trophy sponsored by Home Service Oil Company. Ross’ paintings will also be on display at the Jefferson College Art Exhibition in July and early August. Neo said his success at this year’s event has led him to consider going to university to study art.
Festus senior Kylie Richardson won first place in the Senior Artwork category, earning her free tuition for a full day of art workshops. Her portfolio won first place and will be on display at Jefferson University this summer. Kylie says she likes working with different styles.
Brandy Brooks-Fehlker is an art teacher at Festus High School and said “Mastodon” is important to her students.
Mastodon Arts/Science Regional Fair Executive Director Samantha Declu said this year’s event was a success and looks forward to partnering with more schools in the coming months to involve students in next year’s fair. I’m doing it.
