The review of the Otaku Goggles that everyone has been waiting for is finally here. Mark Zuckerberg tried out Apple’s Vision Pro and gave his thoughts.
The founder and CEO of Meta posted a video on Instagram on Tuesday that essentially destroys Apple’s recently launched mixed reality headset. Zuckerberg’s ultimate takeaway with the Vision Pro, which retails for $3,500 and competes directly with Meta’s $500 Quest headset, is that the company’s products are not only more affordable, but better. That’s what it means.
“Up until now, I thought Quest was better value for many people because it was better quality and about 1/7th cheaper, but after using it… [Vision Pro] Not only is Quest a better value, but it also has a better product lifespan, Zuckerberg said in the video. “They each have different strengths, but overall Quest is better at most things people use mixed reality for.”
Zuckerberg and Apple CEO Tim Cook have a feud that goes back several years. So they were never meant to be evangelists for each other’s geek goggles. But Zack didn’t hold back.
In the video, he ticks off a list of great features for the Quest. Brighter screen, wider field of view, more immersive content, no wires, no “blur”, lightweight. The ease of use and comfort of Apple’s Vision Pro has been criticized since its release, with some people starting to return the device. Zuckerberg made sure to point out in his reviews that the Quest was “much more comfortable” than his Vision Pro. He says, “We designed it to weigh 120 grams less, which makes a huge difference in appearance.”
Compliments, needles
Zuckerberg allowed himself two compliments about Vision Pro. “Eye tracking is very good,” he acknowledged, adding that similar levels were included in previous versions of the Quest and will be included in future models. He also said the Vision Pro has “higher resolution” than Meta’s Quest, which is also “really nice.” Still, I can’t stand being without needles.
“We were surprised at how many trade-offs we had to make to achieve that in terms of the quality of the device: comfort, ergonomics, and other aspects of the display and artifacts. [higher resolution]” Zuckerberg said.
Overall, Zuckerberg seemed to enjoy the fact that Apple can’t do everything right. At least not on the first try.
“If you look around, there seem to be a lot of people who think Vision Pro is better quality because it’s made by Apple and costs $3,000 more,” Zuckerberg said. “But honestly, I was pretty surprised at how much better the Quest is at most of the things people use these headsets for this price difference.”

And CEO Mehta committed an unforgivable act. He mocked Apple’s legions of enthusiasts.
“I know some fanboys get upset every time someone dares to question whether Apple will be the leader in a new category,” he said. “But the reality is that every generation of computing has an open model and a closed model. And in mobile he said Apple’s closed model won out, but that’s not always the case.”
Zuckerberg went on to position Meta as on track to at least beat Apple in the race for mixed reality headsets: “Back in the PC era, Microsoft’s open model was the winner, and in this next generation, Meta is on track to beat Apple in the race for mixed reality headsets. “It’s an open model. And I really want to make sure that the open model prevails. Again, the future is not yet written.”
