Manhattan prosecutors suggest delaying Trump hush money trial by one month

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has indicated he will postpone Donald Trump’s trial scheduled for March 25 by a month, in what is expected to be the former president’s first criminal trial. This is a surprising development.

In a notice to the court on Thursday, Mr. Bragg’s office said it received “a letter from federal prosecutors in New York who had previously investigated the 2016 hush money payments that are the basis of the district attorney’s charges against Mr. Trump.” He said he had just received “approximately 31,000 pages of additional records.”

“Given the unique circumstances described below, the public does not object to a short stay of up to 30 days to allow defendants sufficient time to review the newly shared records.” It is stated in the document.

The latest legal change in the case comes shortly after Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential candidate, left a hearing in federal court in Fort Pierce, Florida. Mr. Trump’s lawyers appear to have had little success in persuading the judge to rule otherwise. Criminal charges: Mishandling classified documents and obstructing government efforts to retrieve classified documents.

Trump was scheduled to go on trial in Manhattan on March 25 on charges of falsifying business records related to hush money payments he made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 campaign. . His lawyers last week asked that the trial be delayed while they try to persuade the Supreme Court not to prosecute him in another criminal case. The criminal case, in federal court in Washington, D.C., focuses on Trump’s attempts to stop Joe Biden from winning the 2020 presidential election.

Trump’s lawyers also asked the judge in the New York case, Juan Machan, to delay or dismiss the hush-money charges, saying the president’s legal right to consider evidence (known as discovery) was violated. I was looking for it. Mr. Bragg’s office maintained that it followed the rules and could not be faulted for records that federal prosecutors had not yet provided.

Trump’s lawyers had asked for a 90-day delay this month after receiving about 73,000 pages of records from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, according to Bragg’s court filing.

According to Wednesday’s filing, federal prosecutors “have produced approximately 31,000 additional pages of records and have indicated that they will be produced again by next week.”

Mr. Bragg’s office has begun reviewing these records, including materials that the district attorney requested from federal prosecutors more than a year ago, which he says are “not relevant to the subject matter of this case.” It appears to contain related materials.” That request was denied, according to Bragg’s filing.

Bragg’s filing said the 73,000 pages produced earlier this month were “virtually unrelated to the subject matter of this case” except for about 172 pages of witness statements.

Mr. Bragg suggested a one-month delay and blamed the problem on Mr. Trump’s legal team. He said prosecutors had “eagerly sought the full grand jury records” and that the defense waited until mid-January to subpoena federal prosecutors for the materials.

This is a developing story. Will be updated.
