“The animal attacked after seeing the human in the cage,” the statement said, according to People magazine. “The zookeeper and other security personnel nearby tried to rescue the person, but the animal dragged him into the enclosure.”

The Times of India reported that the man was mauled to death within 10 minutes of entering the lion’s area and died from excessive bleeding from his wounds. An ambulance and police were called and the lion was moved to another containment area so authorities could retrieve the body. Police identified the man from an identification card found on the body and immediately alerted his family.
