A man has been arrested after a large cockfight was discovered at a Hialeah store, police said.
Juan Romero, 58, was arrested Thursday on charges of breeding, training or possessing or possessing a fighting animal, according to an arrest report.
Officers were conducting a burglary search in the 4600 block of East 10th Lane when they discovered numerous cages containing male chickens, according to the report.
Some had their leg feathers plucked off, a sign of cockfighting, the report said.
Investigators continued to search the scene and discovered more chickens in cages, mimicking the shape of chickens customarily used as agitators to train chickens to fight, according to the report. It is said that they discovered red bubbles.
Investigators contacted Romero, who owns an auto parts company, at the scene, and he admitted to owning the chickens, the report said.
Romero let investigators into the business, where they discovered a cockfighting ring and more chickens, according to the report.
Police said they found about 160 fighting roosters in total.
“It has been determined that Mr. Romero was breeding and training these roosters for bullfighting and for storage at his business,” police said in a statement Friday.
Police took Romero to jail. Attorney information was not available.
Aerial footage from the scene Friday showed several chickens still in cages behind the store.
