New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday proposed Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge’s name as the Indian bloc’s chief ministerial candidate. Delhi Chief Minister and AAP Chairman Arvind Kejriwal also supports the proposal.
Sources said Banerjee had suggested Kharge’s name for the top post at a meeting of the opposition coalition.
In response, Kharge said the focus should be on winning the 2024 Sabah state election.
“Our priority is to win first. We can discuss who will be prime minister later. What’s the point of talking about the prime minister if the MPs aren’t there? First, unite and fight. We should try to get a majority,” Kharge said. The media asked about reports suggesting that the Bengal CM had proposed his name as the face of the Prime Minister of the Indian Union.
This came as the Indian bloc held a key meeting on Tuesday, during which opposition leaders discussed seat-sharing, a single campaign blueprint and India’s support for the 2024 Indian Parliament polls.
