NEW DELHI: Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, one of the candidates for the party’s top post, on Sunday announced his “official launch” into the election campaign.

“On the day I submitted my nomination, I submitted my resignation in line with the party’s ‘one person, one post’ decision taken in Udaipur. From today, I will officially begin my campaign for the post of Nationalist Congress leader.” said Karji. Here, he is addressing a press conference along with three other Congress leaders Ghurav Vallabh, Deepender S Hooda and Syed Nasir Hussain.

Kharge had tendered his resignation as Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Rajya Sabha on Saturday, while he had filed his nomination papers to contest the post of party president a day earlier.

Graf Vallabh also announced that he would resign from his position as the party’s official spokesperson to campaign for Khalji in the internal parliamentary elections.

“All three of us (Congress leaders Mr. Grauv Vallabh, Mr. Deepender S. Hooda and Mr. Syed Nasir Hussain) have accepted the position of official spokesperson to campaign for the election of Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge as party president. I hope that this election will be free and fair,” Vallabh said. .

Notably, the 80-year-old leader has joined nearly 30 leaders, including Deepender Hooda, Salman Khurshid, Ashok Gehlot, Digvijaya Singh, Manish Tewari, Prithviraj Chavan and several others. He had support from Congressional leaders.

Kharge, known as a Gandhi family loyalist, joined the fray at the eleventh hour. Several leaders, including those from the G-23 faction, stood on either side of Mr. Kharji as he filed his nomination papers.

Expanding

Madhusudan Mistry, chairman of the Congress Central Election Board, said they received a total of 20 nomination forms on Friday, adding that the Gandhi family does not support candidates for the party president’s post.

Mistry added that he received 14 nominations from Mallikarjun Kharji, five nominations from Shashi Tharoor and one nomination from Jharkhand Congress leader KN Tripathi.

He said the candidates were contesting on their own terms and that Mr Gandhi was neutral in the race and was not supporting anyone.

Apart from Kharge, G23 leader Shashi Tharoor has also applied for nomination to the post.

Drawing an analogy between the party’s DNA and the Gandhi family, Tharoor on Saturday said no leader can distance himself from the Gandhi family and said he fought the party’s presidential election to bring about “change” in the great old party. He claimed that .

He said the fight between him and Kharge was “not a battle” and stressed that the choice should be left to parliamentary staff.

Mr. Tharoor and Mr. Kharge are at loggerheads in the contest for the post of Congress president.

Digvijaya Singh withdrew from the race on Friday (the last day to submit candidates), saying that although he is a respected senior leader in the party, “I can’t imagine contesting” his support for Kharge. expressed.

Singh is the second Congress leader to withdraw from the race after Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced that he would not contest elections amid political turmoil in the state.

With Gandhi not running for the top position, the great old party is poised to have its first non-Gandhi president in over 25 years.

The party’s poll results will be announced on October 19th.
