This kind of jargon is commonplace here in Brussels, so thankfully Hungary has announced “Make Europe Great Again” as the slogan for its Presidency of the Council of the EU for the next six months.
“Make America Great Again” was, of course, Donald Trump’s campaign slogan when he won the US presidential election in 2016. Now, as he seeks to return to the White House in elections taking place in the middle of Hungary’s presidential elections, his current campaign slogan is nothing more than the sound of someone vomiting into a trash can after eating too many cheeseburgers.
To put Hungary’s slogan in context, the slogan of the soon-to-be-ending Belgian Council Presidency was “Protect, Strengthen, Prepare”, which is a notch above “Live, Love, Laugh” on the scale of banality. Most Council slogans are similarly bad. For 2022, France has chosen “Recover, Strengthen, Belong”, which should no doubt become the motto of an energy drink.
