The Maine School of Science and Mathematics, Maine’s only magnet high school and one of the few public boarding schools in the country, won first place at the 45th Annual Maine Mathematics Competition held at the Augusta Civic Center on Tuesday, April 2. did.
The Maine Mathematics Competition brings together talented math students from all over Maine to compete in understanding difficult math concepts. The Maine Science and Mathematics Ivory team entered the state competition with high expectations after earning the highest scores in the state in five regular math competitions.
The math team is made up of Windham University sophomore Ali Angel; Gabe Austin, senior at Belfast University; Quinn Daly, a junior from South Portland; Ry Hughes, senior at Topsham College; Asher Labbe, a senior from Rome. Graham Reichert, sophomore at Cumberland Foreside. Elizabeth Lessman, Newcastle senior; Thomas Nonken, his sophomore year at Limestone College; Charlie Reischer, senior at Fort Kent College; Lochlan O’Connor, junior at Hallowell College; Van Buren senior Quinn Smith took over as his replacement.
Individual awards included the Skip Gates Bowl for Reischer, Austin tied for fourth in the senior division, Hughes tied for ninth overall and O’Connor tied for third in the junior division.
“In addition to the strong individual performances, I am most proud of the team effort shown in the two team rounds that MSSM advanced to,” said Vanda Madore, one of the math team coaches. “We earned the highest honors possible, first place in the region, first place in Division A, and first place in the state. There are a lot of awards. As a coach, I think it’s great to win as a team.”
The Maine School of Science and Mathematics offers a rigorous STEM-based curriculum in a residential setting, where learning is celebrated by a community of students and adults. Students have unique opportunities to interact with teachers both inside and outside of the classroom and explore courses and topics they would not otherwise have access to.
Highly motivated students at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics begin their academic journey at an in-state school with a strong foundation for excellence in an environment where they can find their place and go beyond it. Build up.
The Maine Association of Math Leagues is an organization that sponsors the state of Maine and numerous math competitions. The Maine Association of Math Leagues promotes innovative solutions to difficult problems through analytical thinking and team-based math competitions.
Participating schools send up to 10 mathematicians and one substitute student to work individually and collaboratively to address challenges. Solutions are revealed after each round and students can challenge if they think they have a valid solution.
Topics range from Algebra 1 to pre-calculus, and students require both academic ability and the ability to work as a team.
