Google Photos offers a variety of AI-powered editing tools, including Magic Editor, Photo Unblur, and Magic Eraser. However, these tools required a Pixel or a paid Google One subscription. Earlier this week, we saw evidence that Google could end this exclusivity, and now the company is making that change.
In a big change, Google announced today that it is removing subscription requirements for some of its photo app AI editing tools. Starting May 15th and over the next few weeks, all Google Photos users on Android, iOS, and Chrome OS will have access to the following tools:
- magic eraser
- Remove blur
- HDR effects for photos and videos
- portrait blur
- portrait light
- color pop
- empty proposal
- cinematic pictures
- collage editor styles
- video effects
Mobile users aren’t the only ones in on the party. The tech giant is also expanding access to other types of devices, including Chromebooks (particularly the Chromebook Plus model) and tablets. These devices must run Chrome OS version 118 or later. Android and iOS devices require at least 3GB RAM and Android 8.0/iOS 15 or later.
Magic Editor, which was previously exclusive to the Pixel 8 series, will now be available to more people. However, there are some caveats. Regular Android and iOS users can save Magic Editor only 10 times per month. This restriction does not apply to all kinds of his Pixel users, not just Pixel 8 users. This limit also doesn’t apply to users with Google One plans larger than 2TB.
