The Lahainaluna Science Olympiad team will advance to the finals of the Hawaii State Science Olympiad Tournament after winning the medalist division at the recently concluded Maui Regional Science Olympiad Tournament. The event will be held on April 6, 2024 at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus. The team brought home three gold medals, two silver medals, and seven bronze medals in the chemistry lab, microbiology mission, anatomy, and physiology areas.
“I joined the Lahainaluna Science Olympiad team for the first time when I was in second grade because I wanted to expand my knowledge of science.” Emily Hegnes, who competed in the ChemLab event and is graduating this year, said: “As someone who wants to pursue a career in STEM, this experience was invaluable. The bond between our team is something I will cherish when I look back on my experience.” she added.
“As a newbie to tournaments, I felt anxious and intimidated, but as the day progressed I became less nervous and had more fun.” Zabrey Naizman, who participated in the forest event, said:

“It’s great to know that our students are working so hard to advance their knowledge outside of the four walls of the classroom.” said math teacher CJ Ancheta, one of the team’s coaches.
