Two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a beloved Los Angeles-area coach and community volunteer, the subject of a special report by USA TODAY.

Jose Quesada Jr., 46, was killed on July 27, 2023, after serving food to hundreds of people at a public event in a city park in the Wilmington neighborhood of south Los Angeles. Although his shooting death remained unsolved for months, his legacy was remembered by generations of the city’s youth.

Quesada, known as “Coach,” coached youth basketball and baseball for nearly 30 years. He believed that sports could help set children on the right path and keep them away from gangs. In addition to coaching, Quesada spent his free time raising money for people in need.

Gang violence has been prevalent in Wilmington for decades. In a USA TODAY report and a 2023 video documentary, the Los Angeles Police Department specifically noted Quesada’s impact on community safety.

That legacy made his death all the more shocking. Quesada was preparing to leave an event at Wilhall Park in Wilmington late Friday night when he was struck in the head by a single gunshot. He was volunteering at his Summer Nights in the Light, one of many events around Los Angeles aimed at keeping kids off the streets through entertainment, food, and sports.

No evidence has emerged to suggest that Quesada was the intended target. For months, police had said only that they were looking for further clues in the case.

The Los Angeles Police Department announced that a press conference is scheduled for Thursday, at which police and prosecutors will release details of the suspect and arrest.

Jose Quesada's family and friends gathered in the square where he was shot three months ago for the unveiling of the Jose Quesada Memorial Plaza. Quesada was shot and killed on July 27, 2023, during a community event at Wilmington Recreation Park.
