Pressed about how President Joe Biden’s performance might affect the election of the next House candidate, several Democratic House members slammed former President Donald Trump’s response during last night’s debate.
Congressman Mickey Sherrill: The New Jersey swing district representative acknowledged it had been a “tough night,” but focused on Trump’s response: “What really stood out to me was that Trump denied three times that he was going to accept the results of a democratic election, said he was proud to have overturned Roe, and said he was proud of the insurrectionists. This is a man who will not stand up for democracy.”
Congresswoman Debbie Dingell: The Michigan senator stressed that the president’s actions will not hurt Democrats’ chances of retaking the House in November. “I’m going to win my district on my own merit. I’ve worked in my district and helped other candidates win districts,” she said. “We’re not going to lose the House overnight. Our candidates are going to work in their districts and show what they stand for, what they’re fighting for and what they’re going to bring to the American people.”
Congressman Gregory Meeks: The House foreign affairs leader, a top Democrat, acknowledged it had been a tough night for Biden and said the president should “get in front of the American people and hold a town hall meeting” to prove he’s up to the job. Meeks expressed confidence Biden is the right man for the presidency because he’s seen him do it: “I’ve seen him negotiate with world leaders, discuss every single crisis that we’ve dealt with, work with them, interact with them,” he said.
Congressman Bennie Thompson: The top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee agreed with Meeks. “Obviously, he needs to get his message out to the public. I think his strategy is to stay engaged,” Thompson said, but declined to say whether Biden should take part in the second debate. “That’s his decision,” the Mississippi Democrat replied.
Senator Ro Khanna: Asked if he might field another candidate, the California Democrat said, “In this country, you become a candidate by winning the vote. He won the votes of the Democratic primary voters. So it was his and Jill Biden’s decision to run, and he won the votes. Nobody can overturn that.”
