LineageOS is now Android 14 with new system apps

summary

  • LineageOS 21 releases stable builds sooner than usual thanks to previous efforts to adapt to the simpler requirements of Android 12, 13, and Android 14.
  • LineageOS 21 includes various Lineage app updates, including a revamped Aperture camera app and redesigned materials for system apps like Calculator, Gallery, Dialer, and Messages.
  • The LineageOS team has created a common SoC-specific kernel base for Snapdragon SoCs to help roll out new builds faster and with less effort. They have also made other improvements and contributions to various apps and utilities.

Few other custom ROMs for Android are as popular as LineageOS. ROMs have been around for years and are available on a variety of devices, so they remain relevant and working years after they are abandoned by the original device manufacturer. Typically, the team behind LineageOS releases unofficial builds of the ROM as soon as a new Android version is released. Stable releases arrive a few months later (usually in April of the following year). With LineageOS 21, the team maximized its efforts and released a stable build almost two months earlier than usual.

The quick release of LineageOS 21 was made possible by the team’s previous efforts to adapt to Android 12 and 13 UI changes and the relatively simple requirements of Android 14. In addition to being the latest release for Android, LineageOS 21 brings many improvements to the Lineage app.

The Aperture camera app in ROM has a revamped interface and supports all new video features enabled by the updated CameraX API, including HDR video recording. System apps like Calculator, Gallery, Dialer, and Messages also received a long-awaited Material You redesign.

To speed up the rollout of new builds and reduce extra effort on the part of developers, the LineageOS team has created a common SoC-specific kernel base for many Snapdragon SoCs.

Below are the official release notes highlighting the major changes in LineageOS 21.

  • Security patches from January 2023 to February 2024 have been merged into LineageOS 18.1-21.
  • Glimpse of Us

: Introducing the shiny new app Glimpse! It will be the default gallery app starting with LineageOS 21

  • An extensive list of applications has been significantly improved or redesigned.
    • Aperture: Touch of Material You, new video features, and more!
    • Calculator: Completely redesigned material
    • Contact: Material U Design Coordination
    • Dialer: Major cleanup and code updates, material user and bug fixes.
    • Eleven: Material You Design Update
    • Jelly: Updated interface, material user, and location permissions per website
    • LatinIME: Material U enhancements, spacebar trackpad, fixed number rows
    • Message: Material design adjustments
  • All-new boot animation by our amazing designer Vazguard!
  • Both SeedVault and Etar have been updated to their latest upstream versions.
  • WebView updated to Chromium 120.0.6099.144.
  • We have further evolved the side pop-out expansion volume panel.
  • The Updater app can now install A/B updates faster (thanks Google!)
  • We delivered further upstream changes and improvements to the FOSS Etar calendar app that we integrated a while back.
  • We’ve been delivering more changes and improvements upstream to the Seedvault backup app.
  • Android TV builds ship with an ad-free Android TV launcher, unlike Google’s ad-enabled launcher. Most Android TV Google Apps packages now have the option to use the Google Ad-enabled launcher or an ad-restricted version.
  • The merge script has been significantly overhauled to greatly simplify the process of merging Android security information and to make supporting devices, such as Pixel devices, with full source releases more streamlined.
  • Our extraction utility can now extract directly from OTA and factory images, further simplifying monthly security updates for administrators of devices that receive regular security patches.
  • LLVM is fully adopted, with builds using LLVM bin-utils by default and optionally the LLVM integrated assembler. If you are using an older kernel, don’t worry, you can opt out at any time.
  • A global quick settings light mode was developed to ensure that this UI element matches the device theme.
  • The setup wizard has been adapted to Android 14 with improved styling, a more seamless transition, and a large amount of legacy code removed.
  • The experience for developer kits (Radxa 0, Banana Pi B5, ODROID C4, Jetson

LineageOS 21 also brings significant name changes. The team will no longer follow the Subversion naming scheme as before. This allows you to align your custom ROM naming scheme with Google’s quarterly maintenance release model. That’s why the latest release of the ROM is called LineageOS 21 instead of 21.1, even though it’s based on Android 14 QPR 1.

With the rollout of the first LineageOS 21 stable build, the team is ending support for LineageOS 19.1. LineageOS 18.1 is not deprecated to ensure support for older devices, but its codebase is feature frozen.

LineageOS 21 is available through our revamped download portal. If you upgraded from an older official build of LineageOS, you don’t need to wipe your phone. However, if you are switching from an unofficial build, we recommend wiping it to avoid any issues.
