LG Display has diversified its supply line for display driver ICs (DDI) used in OLED panels for its customer Apple.
Taiwan’s Novatek will work with existing supplier LX Semicon this year to supply chips for the iPhone 16’s OLED panels for the first time.
LG Display’s latest move is likely aimed at curbing the production costs of OLED panels.
Still, LX Semicon is the only supplier of DDI that BOE uses for iPhone OLED panels.
Meanwhile, Samsung Display will continue to use only Samsung System LSI for iPhone OLED panels.
LG Display has only half the production capacity of OLEDs for iPhones compared to rival Samsung Display, so there is a limit to cost reduction through scale expansion.
By comparison, as the largest supplier of iPhone OLED panels, Samsung Display has little incentive to add another supplier in case the technology leaks.
Meanwhile, Apple has changed the OLED panel design for the iPhone 16. Samsung Display and LG Display are currently facing difficulties in increasing yield.
The new OLED panel uses a border reduction structure that aims to make the bezel at the bottom of the screen thinner. This means that more circuits need to be placed on a smaller surface.
