iPhone 16’s AI-focused chipset
Following Qualcomm, Samsung, and MediaTek, Apple plans to add AI-focused hardware to the next generation of Apple silicon. These are expected to be dedicated AI cores, likely optimized to balance battery life and productivity needs.
“These additional cores will improve performance. This is consistent with rumors that the next series of iPhones will have generative AI capabilities. When I say rumors, I mean Apple is working on generative AI. That also means that CEO Tim Cook told me on the company’s earnings call that Apple will announce more details later this year, almost certainly at WWDC in June or when the iPhone is released. He said he would announce it in the fall.

Exciting iOS 17.4 update
Remember, the release of iOS 17.4 is scheduled for March 6th and must be deployed to meet the European Union’s DMA ruling. There is also a lot to look forward to. Forbes’ David Phelan takes a look at the beta and picks out some highlights.

Microsoft and Metalobby Europe over App Store changes
Apple believes changes to the App Store and third-party access for iPhone owners satisfy European regulators. Developers and competitors took little time to consider the financial implications of Apple’s requests and accused Apple of not responding well enough.
“The first step [to comply with the DMA] “What Apple has proposed is far too outrageous to actually create a meaningful alternative to the single store available on the world’s largest gaming platform: mobile phones,” said Microsoft’s head of gaming. Phil Spencer told the Financial Times. “So we will continue to work with regulators to keep it open.”
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also dismissed Apple’s proposal as “onerous” and “against the spirit of EU regulation”, saying he would be surprised “if developers choose to enter an alternative app store.” He said it would be.

Apple announces new battery numbers for iPhone
In parallel with iOS 17.4’s software impacts, Apple is retesting current iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro devices and older hardware to see how the new code affects battery life. The published report is interesting.

When will your MacBook become OLED?
While it may be a common fitment on Windows laptops, Apple has been reluctant to add OLED options to macOS laptops. The supply chain has shown more signs this week that Apple is preparing for the switch, but it won’t happen right away.
“The current M3 generation of MacBook Pro models use Mini-LED technology, and that’s unlikely to change this year. The M3 MacBook Air hasn’t arrived yet, but it’s expected to launch in mid-March. “Consumer laptops will have OLED. Realistically, we won’t see a MacBook with OLED until 2025.” Samsung’s impact on the supply chain will not be felt until 2027.”

New AirPods, new features
Apple is gearing up for a major refresh of its AirPods series, dropping key features from the Pro series into its standard true wireless earbuds. The new AirPods will be an attractive option, but will they be cannibalized by more expensive audio accessories?
“The two models are differentiated not only by price, but also by features. Apple’s more expensive AirPods (as opposed to the Pro and Max models) include noise-cancelling for the first time. This is a huge change and makes me wonder if people will choose these over the AirPods Pro. There’s also a charging case with a speaker in addition to USB-C, and you can use Find My to Now with the AirPods Pro case.”

The list of top 10 smartphones of 2023 will be a fun read in Cupertino. The iPhone takes his first place to his seventh place, giving him a wide lead over Samsung and his other Android competitors.
